The State Government is developing a new Regional Plan for Greater Adelaide (GARP), which will provide a long-term vision for where and how Greater Adelaide will grow.
The trends informing regional plans of the past were relatively clear and stable. But this time, things are a little different. The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted society in ways we never thought possible. Working from home hours have significantly increased, which is changing our movement patterns and places of work. The cost of living is getting worse, creating an even greater need for more housing that is affordable to live in and access. The impacts of climate change are increasing and becoming more disruptive.
To advance the GARP, the State Planning Commission (Commission) has released a Discussion Paper presenting options for how and where we might accommodate another 670,000 people by 2051.
How do we consider changes and disruptions over the short, medium and long term? Should we pivot back to more greenfield development or should we continue to focus on existing urban areas? What housing types should we encourage and what development models should we use to achieve outcomes sought? How can we make housing and living more affordable? How should new developments integrate with public transport services and encourage active living? How green and sustainable should our urban environments be? How do we grow and live in a more healthy, confident, equitable and sustainable way? How do we make a better and greater Adelaide?
Join us at Mache as we unpack these questions and the Commission’s Discussion Paper together. Our panelists include Anita Allen, urban and regional planner and former State Government Executive, Dr Hulya Gilbert, academic and urban and regional planner, and Tony Cole, affordable housing builder and urban developer. Get informed and get ready to lead your own conversations and write your submissions.
