Movement futures: are we going in the right direction?

South Australia is at a fork in the road. Climate Change and commitments to reach net zero are requiring new ways to think about how we move around our city and State. If we are to reach our net zero targets, significant reductions in emissions from the movement sector will need to be delivered.

It’s been almost 10 years since the State Government’s Integrated Transport and Land Use Plan was released. A lot has changed.

Tram strategies and investments appear to have gone off track. Electric vehicles and hybrids are starting to take off. Adelaide has facilitated the emergence of new micro mobility options such as e-bikes and e-scooters. We have also experimented with semi-autonomous vehicles.

At the same time, some things have remained the same. There continues to be record investments in road projects. Our urban footprint continues to expand, which triggers greater private vehicle use and more traffic, not less. Plans for more dedicated and protected bike lanes to increase bike riding and improve safety continue to go around in circles.

The State Government has recently developed three new strategies that cover some aspects of how we might move in the future.

  • South Australia’s Road Safety Strategy to 2031

  • South Australia Walking Strategy 2022 to 2031

  • Draft SA Cycling / Bike Riding Strategy

The City of Adelaide has just embarked on developing a Cycling Infrastructure Strategic Action Plan. In addition, the State Government is embarking on a refresh of the Regional Plans.

UFX is of the view that these strategies and plans do not appear to be linked and there doesn't appear to be any plan for a comprehensive and integrated movement strategy that outlines how we will move in our emerging urban and regional forms.

UFX has assembled four experts to reflect on our current State, discuss the challenges we face and the opportunities we should realise going forward, and explore what technologies, tools and approaches we should use to get us where we need to be.
